How often should I change the AC filter in my house?
Filter schedules depend on filter thickness, pets, and how often the system runs. This page quotes published maintenance intervals. It does not tell you to open the furnace cabinet beyond the filter slot.
Safety first: when to call a pro
Leave if you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds; call 911 or the gas utility from outside. Do not open refrigerant lines, gas valves, or electrical panels. You may slide out a filter or reset a dry breaker once. If the breaker trips again or you smell burning, stop and call a technician.
Filter swaps and thermostat batteries are homeowner maintenance when the equipment is off and dry. Adding refrigerant, wiring repairs, and combustion checks are not. EPA Section 608 covers technicians who service refrigerant circuits.
What do ENERGY STAR and Energy Saver recommend?
ENERGY STAR says to check the filter every month, especially in heavy-use seasons, and change it at least every three months. The U.S. Department of Energy Energy Saver program also lists regular filter checks as basic maintenance. Hold the filter to a light; if you cannot see light through it, replace it.
Write the install date on the filter edge so you are not guessing. A calendar reminder on the first of each month matches the ENERGY STAR check guidance.
When should you change it sooner?
Change the filter sooner if you have shedding pets, ongoing renovation dust, or allergy sufferers in the home. EPA indoor air guidance ties clean filters to better airflow and particle capture. A filter that bows or whistles has been in too long. Do not run the system with no filter installed.
MERV ratings describe capture, not lifetime. A dense filter may need earlier replacement if the label or installer says so.
Will a dirty filter stop cooling?
A severely clogged filter can reduce airflow enough that rooms feel warm while the outdoor unit still runs. Swap the filter before you assume refrigerant is low. If cooling stays weak with a clean filter, see the guide on AC running but not cooling and avoid opening refrigerant lines yourself.
Link airflow fixes to the AC not cooling but fan is running guide when needed.
Steps
- Turn the system off at the thermostat. Slide the filter out without forcing the rack.
- Check monthly, replace at least quarterly. Follow ENERGY STAR timing unless the label says otherwise.
- Upgrade timing for pets or dust. Inspect the filter face, not only the calendar.
- Install the arrow toward the blower. Airflow direction is printed on the frame.
- Call if rooms stay warm with a clean filter. Airflow may be fine while another fault remains.
Questions
Can I wash a disposable filter?
Only if the label says washable; most cardboard frames are single use.
Does a thicker filter last longer?
Sometimes, but follow the manufacturer months-rated on the package.
